Frequently Asked Questions about UG Continuing Student Scholarships

Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) offers a variety of scholarships to qualified undergraduate students. Below are some frequently asked questions about the Continuing Student Scholarship.

What if I change to part-time courseload after I receive the scholarship?

If you receive a scholarship and you are a part-time student that same semester, you must file the Undergraduate Scholarship Application Reduced Course Load Form before the end of the Add/Drop Period. Request forms are available from the Academic Advising Center (AAC).

Permission is usually only granted in cases where a student is graduating in that semester, and has fewer courses required than amounts to full-time.

For example, if you are graduating in the spring and taking fewer than 12 credits to meet the graduation requirements, you should submit the Undergraduate Scholarship Application Reduced Course Load Form.

I am taking a leave of absence next semester. Am I eligible to apply for the following semester, after I return?

If you meet the eligibility guidelines before your leave of absence, then yes, you are eligible.

For example, if you are a full-time student in the spring and taking a leave of absence in the summer, you are eligible to apply for the fall scholarship.

Is there a specific format for the personal statement?

No, there is no set format for the personal statement.

What should I write about in my personal statement?

The personal statement is a way to show the Scholarship Committee why you should receive the scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by merit and need. So, please explain your strengths and accomplishments, and/or how the funds would help you succeed in your studies.

What is the minimum length of the personal statement?

There is no minimum length for the personal statement.

Do I need to submit faculty references?

No. The scholarship application changed in Fall 2021, and you no longer need to submit faculty references.

What other supporting documents are needed to apply?

For most students, the only document needed is the personal statement.

If you have a financial hold, you also need to submit the Deferred Payment Plan Agreement (signed by you and the Manager of the Bursar's Office).

Can I use Continuing Student Scholarships for Fly2Philly or Temple Rome?

No, Continuing Student Scholarships (academic and need-based) cannot be applied toward Main Campus or Temple Rome tuition charges. Therefore, students on Fly2Philly or Study Abroad in Rome will not be eligible for Continuing Student Scholarships. However, the Continuing Student Scholarships can be applied for tuition at exchange programs listed on the Exchange Programs page on the TUJ website.

How is the scholarship amount decided?

Award amounts differ based on the strength and size of the application pool and available funds.

I'm a study abroad student. Am I eligible for the Undergraduate Continuing Student Scholarship or Need-Based Scholarship?

No, you are not. These scholarships are only available to Japan-admit students who are seeking to graduate from TUJ and are not available to study abroad students.

Can I apply for the Continuing Student Scholarships if I have received the Dean, Diamond, or Mochida-Stronach scholarships?

Students are not eligible to receive the Continuing Student Scholarships for semesters they are already receiving the Dean, Diamond, or Mochida-Stronach scholarships. Students who receive the Dean, Diamond, or Mochida-Stronach scholarships are eligible to apply for the Continuing Student Scholarships so long as the scholarship will be awarded for a semester they will not receive the Dean, Diamond, or Mochida-Stronach scholarships.
