English for Academic Purposes

Are you proficient in university-level English with enough Academic English skills?

This course is designed for those who aim to study abroad in undergraduate or graduate programs to begin to acquire the necessary academic skills. By learning and practicing the academic skills required to take up the challenge of undergraduate or graduate classes, this course enables students who have little experience with academic courses taught in English to smoothly transition into undergraduate or graduate programs. Classes are held in the evenings, so you can take the course after classes at your university or after work.

COURSE FOCUS

There are three different course focuses offered in this course (see below). A different course focus will be offered each semester, in turn. We encourage you to take this course for three semesters to acquire all three academic skills.

Fall (September-November) Content

The Content focuses on improving the students’ English skills by studying academic topics such as those found in university’s General Education courses. This class has an overall theme, and each class deals with the topics and issues from humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences related to the overall theme. Using and improving students' English skills through readings, discussions, and mini-research form the core of this course. Students can practice giving presentations and writing reports on the material studied in class. In addition, they can build academic skills needed in their future study at a university or graduate school, such as note-taking, deep discussion, and quiz/exam-taking skills through class activities and assignments.

Spring (January-March) Reading-based Writing

This Reading-based Writing (RBW) focuses on how to write academic essays or research papers. Academic writing requires analytical reading skills and critical thinking skills in addition to writing and language skills. Therefore, the writing assignments for this class are based on reading articles and other academic texts on various themes, rather than on personal knowledge and experience, and students' writing is evaluated based on reading skills, English language skills, and finally, actual writing skills. Students should expect to complete several short writings and one longer essay with a few drafts. Correct use of quotations and citations—using MLA or APA style—will also be covered.

Summer (May-July) Fluency & Accuracy

The Fluency & Accuracy focuses on how to become more fluent and accurate when using English in both speaking and writing. For the fluency part, students will learn to discuss a particular issue objectively in depth, with supporting examples and evidence and the use of correct language. For the accuracy part, students will learn to use correct grammar forms and to choose appropriate vocabulary. In addition to discussions, short writings are assigned; this is a great opportunity for students to have a chance to receive individual feedback on their writing from the instructor and to review basic academic writing skills that students previously learned.

INDIVIDUAL GUIDANCE

Individual guidance is given outside of the classroom hours during the course. Each student receives 1-2 sessions about the class content, essay composition and assignments for 10-15 minutes before the start of class, at times arranged between the student and instructor.

Note: There will be no make-up of the individual guidance for those who miss it.

STUDENT COMMENTS

I learned how to read, write, and present academically. I think this will help me with my English presentations at my university.

I was able to spend a worthwhile time during the 21 class days. Level-wise, I think the class was at a higher level than me. Although I had many difficulties, I also had a lot of fun.

The instructor's teaching method was easy to understand. I think the way he answered our questions and provided assistance was wonderful.
