Do you have the Academic English skills necessary for classes at graduate schools?

This course is designed for those who have already been accepted into or who will soon apply to graduate courses at TUJ or in English-speaking countries. By cultivating the academic skills necessary to take up the challenge of graduate school classes, the course enables students who have not graduated from English-speaking universities to smoothly transition into graduate school. This course is conducted in English. Students learn the foundations of academic skills, including critical thinking skills, analytical skills, and time management, as well as academic English skills, including reading academic texts, writing academic papers, essay formats, research and citation methods, how to participate in group discussions, and how to give presentations.
The first half of the course will focus on acquiring the basic academic English skills. In the second half of the course, students will practice those skills they acquired. The second half is designed to further develop what students learned in the first half, encouraging retention and progression of the academic English skills.

    INDIVIDUAL GUIDANCE

Individual guidance is given outside of the classroom hours during the course. Each student receives 1-2 sessions about the class content, essay composition and assignments for 10-15 minutes before the start of class, at times arranged between the student and instructor.

Note: There will be no make-up of the individual guidance for those who miss it.

    MESSAGE FROM THE INSTRUCTOR

If your educational plans include advanced study in a graduate school, please consider taking this course. Through intensive study, students will learn the academic skills set essential for success in graduate schools. In addition to individual work, this course fosters a lively spirit of teamwork with fellow classmates—just like many classes in graduate school. I hope to meet you in class!

      STUDENT COMMENTS

I learned academic writing skills and vocabulary to write research papers, both necessary to study at a graduate school.

I was able to make connections with classmates who have the same goals.

I learned how to write a research paper, discussion skills, and presentation skills. Presentation skills I learned in the course were helpful to make a presentation at work.
