Visa Information

All non-Japanese students who intend to take classes for more than three months and who do not have a resident, diplomatic, dependent, spousal or other type of visa must acquire a Japanese student visa through TUJ. Students cannot apply for a Japanese student visa independently of TUJ.

Temple can sponsor visas for overseas full-time students in the following programs:

  • J.D. Semester Study Abroad

  • LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law) (Formal Admission Only)

  • LLM in Transnational Law

  • Certificate International Law, Certificate in U.S. Law

No Visa Support for Conditional Admission to LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law):

Temple cannot sponsor visas for overseas students seeking to be admitted conditionally to the LLM for Foreign-Trained Lawyers (U.S. Law) as a student visa requires full-time student status.

If you need a student visa to study at TUJ, please contact us. We will inform you of the student visa application procedure and required documents.

U.S. Bar Exam Information

Most U.S. states require applicants to hold a J.D. degree to seek admission to the Bar. However, a few U.S. states have historically permitted graduates of an LLM program, who do not hold a J.D.degree, to sit for the bar examination if they meet other requirements related to both their prior degree and the types of credits earned during the LLM program. A separate Board of Law Examiners for each state establishes and periodically revises the requirements for admission. In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction.

To discuss possible eligibility for the bar exam in the limited number of states that currently permit foreign-educated lawyers to take their exam, please contact us.
